Class frequently asked questions

What can I expect in a class?

I show the poses and you copy.  I give verbal instructions, you follow.  If needed I can add adjustments.  You will be introduced to the basic asanas, (postures) they include standing, seated, twisting and restorative postures amongst others. They all have different effects on the mind and body but will improve overall health and improve concentration.  Every class is different. Remember this as it is worth trying a few classes.

Can anyone do Iyengar Yoga?

Yes,  Iyengar Yoga is for everyone! it doesn’t matter what age, gender, religion or what your fitness levels are. Even if you think you are really stiff or inflexible, Iyengar Yoga can change this, increasing your flexibility and your long term well being.  You will have to sign a medical declaration form but this is so postures can be adapted to suit you.

How do you adapt postures?

One of the unique features of Iyengar Yoga is the use of props, this allows students to achieve the correct alignment & develop strength and control.

What shall I wear?

Wear comfortable clothes that do not restrict your movement, shorts or leggings and a t- shirt are fine but yoga must be practised in bare feet.  Please do not wear really baggy trousers.  I need to be able to see roughly what is going on with your body.

Anything else?

Do not eat before an Iyengar yoga class; leave a gap of 2-3 hours before your last snack or 4 hours after a heavy meal, even if you feel hungry.  One last thing is to always tell me if you are injured or feeling unwell or pregnant.  It is very important it means I can change postures just for you without fuss or attention but it is necessary.
