United Nations International yoga day celebrations 21 June 2015

I was delighted to be leading a sequence of yoga postures as recommended by Geeta Iyengar, daughter of BKS Iyengar, at the Manchester & District Institute of Iyengar yoga  on Sunday 21st June.

Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi asked the world leaders to adopt an International Yoga Day, saying that by changing lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change. Addressing the 193-member UN General Assembly in United Nations. Modi said “Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day,” Noting that Yoga is “an invaluable gift of our ancient tradition”, he said: “It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.”

“Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well being,” he said, adding “By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change.”

I was delighted that so many people came and we had such fun practising together, you can see my timelapse video here: https://youtu.be/Lj3c2wYjNGU

Rope Workshop photos- Yoga Kurunta (puppet yoga)

Puppet yoga or Yoga Kurunta can be great fun and give you a real insight into how yoga postures can feel, which will revolutionise your practice.  Yoga ropes are fantastic for helping with any areas of stiffness too.

The workshop I held on 20th July was completed with some great comments, people felt great, improved their confidence and got rid of some long standing aches and pains, with one of my students Malcolm leaving the workshop saying ‘right, where do I get ropes!’

So I thought I would share the photos with you…..

The workshop was held at the Manchester and District Institute of Iyengar yoga as they have a rope wall as you can see from the photos, http://www.mdiiy.org.uk/

BKS Iyengar in China

This year saw Guruji, BKS Iyengar, travel to China in his 93rd year.  Although Mr Iyengar has expressed that he no longer wants to travel to teach as he still teaches and coaches his granddaughter in Pune India, the summit was seen as a historical event.

The rise of interest of Iyengar yoga in China has been quite phenomenal and My Iyengar taught and met many thousands of yoga students during the 3 day summit.  He himself was an amazing example of the power of yoga, on his feet for days, meeting, greeting and teaching so many.  A true inspiration.

You can read more about the summit here on his very own website.

Do try this at home!

As you may know many yogis chant the ‘om’ sounding a-u-m, at the beginning of a class.  It’s thought that chanting the om is a great way to calm the nerves and slow the breathing, however many teachers do not start the class in this way, so do try this at home:

I found this web site where you can ‘Do as one’ chant the om simultaneously with people from around the world chanting at the same time! Its great, practice at home to feel and hear the sound and loose those inhibitions!

Click here to chant the om with people around the world.

Yoga Bear practising upavistha konasana

Who could resist this beautiful bear practising a 15 minute stretching yoga sequence including upavistha konasana and variations.

The bear pictured at a Finnish zoo woke from a nap to stretch and balance effortly on her seat bones.

A lesson to us all!
